Making Use of a Metal Locker as a Home Storage System
The use of metal for storage units, as opposed to traditional wood shelving or modern plastics, is a good option in many ways. Metal racks and sheds are usually robust and not so easily damaged as, say, a wooden backyard shed that has to stand up to winds and rain all year. On the outside, though, they may not look so good as natural woods, or even plastics such as vinyl. But they can do their job very well indeed.
For storing a small number of items, either in the garage or shed, a metal locker can do a great job. I guess that many of us think of metal lockers as being for school, gym or some other such place. However, the modern usage extends to small lock up storage units which might just as easily be called mini sheds. Some manufacturers use the term for small garden sheds, such as the Arrow Ezee Locker 8' x 3' Outdoor Storage Shed pictured above.
As you can see in the example, this modern type of “locker” can be used in much the same way as any garden shed, and would make a good garden tool organizer, as well as other odds and end that you use outside. If you have children, then a locker style cabinet is ideal, so that you can safely lock away poisonous herbicides, pesticides and other garden chemicals and cleaners. This 8’ wide example can, as you see, accommodate a small lawn mower too.
We still have that old image of the school or gym locker. Can such lockers be of any use around the home, garage or garden? The answer is “yes they can.” Some type of lock up storage is so important with kids around, so hazardous materials and sharp tools can be kept out of reach of fascinated young hands. You could use one instead of a garage storage rack, or an alternative to wood or chrome shelving, for example.
While most people would not go looking especially for a locker of this type, if you are short of cash and happen to see a used locker for sale, then there is no reason you could not make use of it, especially in the yard shed or as a garage storage solution. If buying second hand, though, be sure to test the keys with the lock, or you will soon have another expense on you hand.
