Making the Most of Backyard Sheds

Backyard shedOnly the most organized and fastidious of people are likely to be able to claim that their home and garden are immaculate, and that their level of tidiness cannot be improved. Most of us, though, suffer from one level of clutter or another. Or is it that clutter suffers from us?

While some homes are the other extreme, and are strewn with apparent debris all over the house, garage and sometimes backyard sheds, for most of us it is simply a matter of not being quite as tidy as we should be, in varying degrees. Clutter is always some sort of problem, but it is only when it gets a bit out of hand that we force ourselves to clear up the mess.

Often, an untidy looking, disorganized home is the result of inadequate storage, and/or the disorganized use of what space there is to store the hundreds of household items that need to be stored. That can apply to anything from home food storage to garden tool organization, from scattered DVD’s to a shed that looks like a bomb’s hit it (at least on the inside!).

While the garage and house itself can have there own issues with clutter, the garden shed is a common place to suffer from lack of proper storage facilities. Solutions, though, are normally readily available and easily applied. That is, if you have a yard shed of sufficient size to cope with everything you need to throw in it.

The priority for the shed, or storage barn in larger gardens, is normally garden tools and equipment. So, when you decide to tackle the frustrating disorder of the garden shed, you should first get those things well catered for. A good garden tool organizer can always be found in the guise of a rack or cabinet. An old metal locker or used kitchen cabinet will suffice, but you can find some specially designed tool organizers that suit every gardener’s needs. For larger tools, such as garden rakes and forks, safety is a particular issue, especially with children around. They can be hung on the shed walls, but ensure they are secure. Very secure.

Depending on the size of your yard, and its design and layout, you may have larger garden equipment which needs to be stored on the floor. This should have priority when organizing your things, and they need to be accessible in the seasons you most need the equipment. A mower, for example, will be needed in summer rather than winter, so your arrangement of the equipment should take that into account.

The right type of shelves and racking in the shed will go a long way towards getting it looking neat, tidy and well organized, leaving you to enjoy time in the garden in a more relaxed frame of mind. Wood shelving is the tradition for garden sheds, but there is no reason you should not try modern shelves such as those made from chrome. It’s all a matter of choice and taste. I suspect most true gardeners, though, still love the nature look and feel of wood.
